Prentice Cooper State Forest Trailhead3998 Game Reserve Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405Get directions →

A massive sandstone bluff overlooking the Tennessee River as it cuts through the gorge below — one of the better-known overlooks on the Cumberland Trail, inside Prentice Cooper State Forest. The hike itself is a real one (around 6 miles round trip, moderate difficulty), so plan a half day rather than a quick stop. Deer and a variety of birds are commonly spotted along the way.

Getting around

Not checked yet

Moderate ~6-mile out-and-back on the Cumberland Trail (sources vary 5.9-6.3 miles), about 1,167 ft of elevation gain, over forested paths and rocky terrain. Free parking at the Game Reserve Road trailhead, with a primitive outhouse nearby - the access road itself is gravel and can be dusty. Open dawn to dusk. Prentice Cooper closes some interior roads mid-December through mid-March, but Snooper's Rock and Davis Pond stay reachable during that closure.

This is what we’ve observed, not a formal accessibility certification. Things change — tell us if this is out of date.
