A bend of the Tennessee River across from downtown Chattanooga holding roughly 12,000 years of American Indian history — the first National Archeological District in the entire National Park Service, and part of the same Trail of Tears route as the region's other Cherokee removal sites.
Still to confirm: current developed trail/visitor access, since much of the district protects undeveloped archeological land.

Sites here chronicle roughly 12,000 years of American Indian occupation, spanning the Archaic, Woodland and Mississippian periods. In 1838, Moccasin Bend was also part of the route Cherokee were forced along during the Trail of Tears removal. Created in 2003 as part of Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park — the first National Archeological District in the entire National Park Service.
